Unleash the SUPER POWER in Your KIDS

Yoga and Meditation for Children and Teenagers: Why This Is the Most Important Investment You Can Make

The pressures on Indian children have never been greater. Academic competition begins earlier than ever. The university entrance landscape is more competitive. Social media amplifies comparison and anxiety in ways that previous generations never experienced. And the natural pressure-release valves — unstructured outdoor play, close-knit extended family, and the unhurried rhythms of traditional life — have been progressively compressed or eliminated.

The result is a generation of children who are, in many cases, genuinely under more pressure than their nervous systems are equipped to handle — and who have not been given the tools to work with that pressure from the inside.

Yoga and meditation, taught correctly and age-appropriately, are those tools. Not as add-ons to an already overscheduled life, but as the fundamental inner development practices that make everything else — learning, creativity, relationships, resilience under pressure — more possible.

Sunil Kanwarjani has been facilitating the Art of Living Foundation’s youth programmes — Utkarsh Yoga for children and Medha Yoga for teenagers — at Actvebody in Borivali West, Mumbai for over 8 years. This is what he has observed, consistently, in the children who go through these programmes.

Utkarsh Yoga — for children aged 8 to 13

Utkarsh Yoga is a holistic programme designed specifically for the developmental stage of middle childhood — an age when children are forming the habits, self-concepts, and emotional patterns that will shape their adult lives. The programme combines yoga postures, pranayama, guided meditation, and interactive activities in a format that is genuinely playful and engaging rather than the forced-seriousness that children immediately resist.

What children develop through Utkarsh Yoga:

  • Nervous system regulation. The pranayama practices directly calm the stress response, giving children an accessible tool for managing anxiety, frustration, and overwhelm that they can use independently in any situation
  • Focus and concentration. Regular meditation produces measurable improvements in sustained attention and working memory — directly benefiting academic performance
  • Emotional intelligence. Children learn to name, understand, and respond to their emotions rather than being controlled by them
  • Physical strength and body awareness. Age-appropriate yoga builds the proprioceptive awareness that improves coordination, posture, and the physical confidence that underpins overall self-confidence
  • Creativity and imagination. The inner stillness cultivated through meditation paradoxically enhances creative thinking by giving the mind the space to make unexpected connections

Medha Yoga — for teenagers aged 13 to 18

Adolescence is the developmental period most in need of inner tools — and the period when those tools are hardest to introduce, because teenagers resist anything that feels imposed or uncool. Medha Yoga works because it meets teenagers where they actually are: facing exam pressure, identity questions, peer dynamics, and the existential uncertainties of growing up in a world that changes faster than any previous generation has experienced.

The programme introduces the Sudarshan Kriya — the powerful rhythmic breathing technique developed by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar that has been the subject of over 100 peer-reviewed studies. Research on adolescents specifically has found that Sudarshan Kriya produces significant reductions in hyperactivity (67%), emotional problems (69%), and significant improvements in cognitive abilities (22%) and overall wellbeing (29%).

For teenagers managing exam anxiety, Sunil Kanwarjani specifically recommends combining the Medha Yoga programme with EFT Tapping for performance anxiety, Brahmi for cognitive support, and Ashwagandha in warm milk at night for the cortisol reduction that protects both immune function and cognitive performance under pressure.

The Ayurvedic complement — nourishing the body alongside developing the mind

The most powerful results come when the inner development work of yoga and meditation is supported by the physical nourishment of appropriate Ayurvedic care. A child whose nervous system is nutritionally depleted — because of sugar-heavy diet, inadequate sleep, or the immune burden of frequent illness — has limited capacity to integrate the practices, however excellent the teaching.

Sunil Kanwarjani recommends the following Ayurvedic foundation for children in the programmes:

  • Chyawanprash every morning — the immune and Ojas-building foundation that ensures the physical system supports the mental development work
  • Brahmi or Ojasvita daily — specifically for cognitive support, memory, and the nervous system nourishment that academic performance requires
  • Ashwagandha in warm milk at bedtime — for teenagers particularly, where exam pressure and late screens are disrupting the sleep that the nervous system needs for learning consolidation
  • Consistent daily routine — the Dinacharya principle applied to children: consistent wake time, warm breakfast, consistent bedtime

Additional therapeutic support where needed

For children with specific challenges, Sunil Kanwarjani integrates additional therapeutic support alongside the yoga and meditation programme:

  • Bach Flower Remedies — for specific emotional patterns: Mimulus for fear, Impatiens for the frustration-driven behaviour of attention difficulties, Larch for lack of confidence, Vervain for the driven perfectionism that exhausts high-achieving teenagers
  • EFT Tapping — for specific phobias, exam anxiety, or emotional blocks that haven’t responded to other approaches. EFT’s rapid results make it particularly child-friendly
  • Craniosacral Therapy — for children with nervous system dysregulation, birth-related tension patterns, or the chronic physical tension that accumulates in highly stressed children
  • Marma Therapy — for children and teenagers with specific physical complaints that have a somatic-emotional dimension

A Nadi Pariksha assessment with Dr. Santosh Kadam provides the constitutional picture that guides the most targeted combination of support for your specific child.
