EFT Self-Tapping: A Beginner's Guide You Can Try Today

A full EFT session with a practitioner goes deeper than anything you'll do alone — but the basic tapping sequence itself is simple enough to practice at home, anytime a specific worry or stress spikes.

Before You Start

Pick one specific thing that's bothering you right now — not "stress" in general, but the actual thought or feeling underneath it. The more specific, the better this works.

The Basic Tapping Sequence

1. Name it and rate it — Say the issue out loud, and rate its intensity from 0–10. This gives you something to measure against afterward.

2. The setup statement — While tapping the side of your hand (the "karate chop" point), repeat three times: “Even though I feel [the specific feeling], I deeply and completely accept myself.”

3. Tap through the points — Move through each point 5–7 times while naming the feeling briefly at each: top of head, eyebrow, side of eye, under eye, under nose, chin, collarbone, under arm.

4. Check back in — Take a breath, and rate the intensity again from 0–10. Repeat the round if it's still high, adjusting your language to reflect what's changed (“this remaining tightness” rather than the original feeling).

What to Expect

Most people notice at least some drop in intensity after one or two rounds — shoulders loosening, breath slowing. It won't resolve everything a real session with a practitioner would, but it's a genuinely useful tool for in-the-moment spikes of stress or worry.

When to See a Practitioner Instead

Self-tapping works well for everyday, situational stress. For deeper or recurring patterns — chronic anxiety, trauma, phobias — working with a practitioner allows for more precise targeting and sustained progress than self-practice alone can offer.
