Choosing a Wellness Coach: What Actually Matters
Share
Wellness coaching has become a crowded word — anyone with an Instagram following and a meal plan template can call themselves a coach. If you're considering working with one, it's worth knowing what actually separates a genuinely useful coaching relationship from a generic one.
Credentials Matter, But Not in the Way Most People Think
A certificate alone doesn't make someone equipped to understand your specific situation. What matters more is whether a coach genuinely understands the systems they're working with — nutrition, yes, but also sleep science, stress physiology, and ideally, a framework for understanding your individual constitution rather than generic one-size-fits-all advice.
Questions Worth Asking Before You Start
- Does this person build a plan around your actual life, or hand you a template?
- Do they address sleep and stress, or only diet and exercise?
- Is there a way to understand your individual constitution, not just generic “healthy eating” advice?
- Do they coordinate with or respect your existing medical care, rather than positioning themselves as a replacement for it?
- Is the relationship ongoing, with room to adjust as your life changes — or a fixed, rigid programme?
Why Constitution-Aware Coaching Makes a Real Difference
Generic advice fails because bodies aren't generic. What works beautifully for someone with a Kapha constitution can genuinely backfire for someone who's Vata-predominant. This is why I begin most coaching relationships by understanding a person's constitutional tendencies — sometimes formally through a Nadi Pariksha assessment — before building any specific plan.
What Makes Coaching Actually Work
The honest answer is consistency and realistic expectations. A coach's job isn't to hand you a perfect plan — it's to help you build a sustainable one, adjust it as life changes, and stay accountable to it without judgment when things don't go perfectly.
A Note from Actvebody
If you've tried coaching before and it didn't stick, it's worth considering whether the plan was ever actually built around your real life in the first place.
